About

The Morosini Fountain, also known as the Lions Fountain, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the heart of Heraklion, Crete. Located in the lively Lions Square (Eleftheriou Venizelou Square), it was built in 1628 during the Venetian rule of Crete, under the direction of Francesco Morosini. The fountain was designed to bring fresh water to the city through an impressive aqueduct system, representing an important engineering achievement of its time. Its most distinctive feature is the four stone lions supporting a circular basin, with water flowing from their mouths. Beautifully decorated with mythological figures, marine creatures, and Venetian symbols, the fountain reflects the artistic heritage of the Venetian period. Today, it is a popular meeting point surrounded by cafés, restaurants, shops, and narrow streets full of life. It is an ideal stop for visitors exploring the historic city centre and experiencing the everyday rhythm of Heraklion.
