About
Chelidoni Beach, also known as Porto Helidoni, is a small, picturesque cove near Paleokastro, on the northern coast of Crete, approximately 9 km west of Heraklion. Its name, Chelidoni (Χελιδόνι), means “swallow” in Greek, referring to the graceful migratory bird associated with spring and freedom. Nestled beneath the coastal road and surrounded by rocky formations, this charming beach features crystal-clear turquoise waters, a pebbled shore, and a sheltered setting ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can reach the beach via a staircase leading down from the road. During summer, a small beach canteen and limited sunbeds and umbrellas offer basic amenities. Its distinctive landscape and inviting waters make it a lovely escape for a refreshing swim close to the city.
